Note: A lot of American hatcheries are cunny about what type of chicken you’re getting. So, you may be getting an Easter Egger, but they’ll deceptively tell you you’re purchasing one of the blue-egg layers.

At times, they intentionally misspell the name: Araucana, Americauna, Americana, etc.

What Chicken Breed Lays Blue Eggs

Here are four breed of chickens that can help you break the mold with incredible blue eggs.

  • Araucana Chickens

The original Araucana chicken breed originated in Chile, a combination of the Quetros and Collonocas chicken breeds.

Araucanas are without a tail head (rumples) and often tufted, and the breed is super rare because many of the chicks die in their shells because of the tufted gene.

True Araucanas can be only acquired from breeder, and they will 100% always lay blue eggs.

  • Ameraucana Chickens

The Ameraucana breed is more available than Araucanas, as they lack the Araucana’s inherent breeding problems.

Instead of ear tufts, they have a beard and muffs. They are friendly birds, known to be both sweet and hardy.

Their eggs are blue in color all times, and they even have “slate” or blue colored legs.

  • Cream Legbar Chickens

The Cream Legbar Chicken has its orgins from Great Britain. It is  a result of crossing Barred Plymouth Rocks with golden Leghorns and Araucanas.

These easy-going birds are amazing foragers that love to be outdoor and are great at avoiding predators.

They are also “autosexing” meaning females and males can be recognized with 100% accuracy upon hatching.

Legbars lay eggs that are blue colored all the time, but may range from a true sky blue to light turquoise or even slightly green eggs.

  • Easter Egger Chickens

The Easter Egger is not an “actual breed” but a mixed-breed chicken that does not conform to any breed standard. But, they are a popular choice among chicken owners because they are smart, friendly, hardy, and lay well in the winter.

This beautiful chicken breed lays large to extra-large eggs in a variety of egg colors, including rose, green, sage, brown, cream, olive, and blue.

Many hatcheries label their Easter Eggers as true Ameraucanas or Araucanas, so beware if you are looking to show your chickens.

The Easter Egger may be a great choice for you if you’re in need of a friendly and hardy chicken that lays variety of colored eggs.
